AbramGeorge, a young Mohawk healer from Akwesasne, was said to be theseventh son of a seventh son. This young fellow garnered a lot ofpress in the late 1920s and early 1930s because of his abilities as ahealer.
The MassenaObserver ran an article on February 17, 1927 under the headline INDIANBOY IS CAUSE OF WORRY. The story dealt with the question ofwhether or not Indians lose their rights when buying a home off thereservation. The house in question was purchased for Abram Georgeby his father, Mitchell.
InBatavia, there lives an 11-year-old St. Regis Indian boy named AbramGeorge. The boy has built up a reputation as a healer and, incidentally, a small fortune.
His father,Mitchell George, has purchased expensive automobiles for the lad andputs him up at the best hotels when traveling.
Now, hewants to buy a home for the boy and he doesnt want it on an Indianreservation. Through an attorney, he asked the assemblyman toascertain whether an Indian would lose his tribal rights, ceded to himby state and federal governments, if he bought a home outside thereservation
Thearticle mentions that Abram had assisted in the recovery of a drowningvictim in the St. Lawrence:
Allefforts to recover the body failed until the Georges went to the scenethe following Monday afternoon. Abram is the seventh son of aseventh son and is therefore supposed to be credited with unusualpowers including the finding of drowned bodies.
Abrampointed out where he believed the body was resting. Grapplingirons struck an object there but could not raise it. Aprofessional diver went down but could find nothing. Tuesdaymorning, however, the grappling irons hooked the body at the spotdenoted by the Indian boy.
Abram is credited not only with the ability to find bodies of drownedpersons but with magical powers of healing and curing lameness. ASt. Regis Indian, he formerly resided with his parents, nine brothersand two sisters between Hogansburg and St. Regis. He has beendoing private practice, besides visiting the fairs in the fall.
On March 10, 1927, the Massena Observer ran anotherarticle under the headline, ABRAM GEORGE, SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTHSON.
Thereis nothing boyish about the little red doctor, says the Batavia DailyNews. Years of traveling around the country and being held up asa supernatural being have given him a reticent manner and a countenanceas solemn as that of Jiddu Krishnamurti, the much heralded NewMessiah, who recently came to this country from the Far East. Heis a husky little chap of 12 years with the true bronze skin of hisrace and tousled shock of straight, black hair. He has unusuallylarge jet black eyes that have a lustrous quality and intensity thatcommand immediate attention. He never questions his fathersorders and goes about his business with the matter of fact air of apractitioner
Thearticle goes on to suggest that his healing power stems more from thefaith of those being healed than in the boy himself, who understandsEnglish but doesnt speak it.
Whilethe powers claimed for the boy are explained by his father only in thestatement that he is the seventh son of a seventh son, it is believedthat this belief must be one of the Iroquois tribe or perhaps some clanof which the Georges are memers. Seneca Indians on the Tonawandareservation say they have never heard of such an Indian legend untilthe coming of the George family to Batavia. There is the beliefthat the seventh son of a seventh son is favored by luck, but as far ascan be learned it is the first time that anyone has come forth with astatement that Indians thus endowed have a magic healing power
The article goes on to describe one Laverne Ellis, aBatavia boy who suffered from an attack of infantile paralysisthat shrank his arms and legs and left him in a wheelchair. AbramGeorge healed him of his afflictions, prompting his mother to declarethe young healer worth his weight in gold.
Abrahamnever speaks from the time he enters the home of a patient until heleaves--a nod or shake of his head or a smile being his only responseto questions asked of him as he massages the atrophied limbs andtwisted body parts of his patient.
The boy was also called upon to rid a haunted housein Memphis, Tennessee of its unwanted guests. After staying inthe home for the thirteen days, the house appeared to be free of theghosts that kept the owners family from enjoying it.
The MassenaObserver ran another article about Abram George on March 20, 1930 underthe headline, INDIAN HEALER RETURNS HOME.
Likea medicine man, whose descendant he is said to be, the youth is reveredto among the members of the St. Regis tribe for it was among them thatthe curative powers of the touch of his hands were first brought tolight. Just at what time this seeming power was discovered is notknown. In recent years he startled thousands with his apparent miracles.
Two yearsago, when he was 14 years of age, accounts of a demonstration given bythe boy at Rochester, swept through pages of newspapers andmagazines. At that time, before a gathering of thousands ofpeople, the boy is said to have given the healing touch to 75 peopleand was eagerly pressed for assistance by others who sought the touchof his hand.
Again, while he was at Batavia near Tonawanda reservation, hundreds of letterscame to him asking him to come to other cities and demonstrate hishealing power, but it was decided that he must wait until he was 16years of age before going out into the world on his curative missions
Abramreturns to Hogansburg after several weeks spent in Miami, Florida, where he mystified hundreds with demonstrations of his apparent powerto heal by touch. At the Alcazar hotel in that city early inJanuary of this year he gave a remarkable revelation of his miraculoushealing before approximately 250 people. The crowd was amazed asafflicted persons announced that they had been helped by the touch ofthe boys hands.
Some haveattributed the boys miraculous powers to his descendancy. He isthe seventh son of a seventh son and from this circumstance is believedto have been endowed with a sort of sixth sense. He is also adirect descendant of a great Indian healer and medicine man who livedin the days of the French and Indian wars when the powerful Iroquoistribes were supreme in the north
Members ofthe St. Regis tribe and other followers of the youth, although unableto account for the work which he has done, stoutly declare that thehealing touch of his hands has brought health to scores of afflicted.
Abram Georges career as a healer eventually came toan end when he grew up, according to a member of the Georgefamily. He lived out the rest of his days in Akwesasne.
