RANCHI: For suspected witchcraft three persons were burnt alive after they were locked inside a house by an irate mob in Lohardaga's Kairo police station on Sunday night. Gowardhan Bhagat, 45, was jailed 15 years ago for beheading a young boy in Lohardaga. After his journey to jail, people branded Bhagat a sorcerer and believed that he targeted young children for pleasing a supernatural power, SP Lohardaga Kartik S told TOI.
The victim Gowardhan Bhagat was a rich man (by village standard) and people believed that his wealth was an indirect product of his involvement into sorcery and witch-craft. "Three sons of Bhagat are well placed - one engineer, one in BSF and the third in Jharkhand police," the SP said.
Around 9pm on Sunday 500-odd locals surrounded Bhagat's house located in Tekatoli under Kairo police station area. "A group of them barged inside the house and locked them in one room before setting it on fire with a burning gas cylinder. Four members of the family managed to escape while four others were trapped in the fire," SP said.
One of the four persons, trapped inside the burning house, was saved by the police. "He was admitted at Rims for treatment," a police officer said.
On Monday an FIR was lodged against 25 named and 500 unknown persons for rioting (IPC 146/147) and murder (IPC 302). "We have detained 17 people so far. Initially it appears to be a case of witch-craft," Kartik said.
"It was a misconception based on baseless rumours because after one incident of beheading a child 15 years ago, he has not beheaded anyone," the SP said.
